In Algeria, AIDS is responsible for most deaths by a disease in Algeria.  AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a disease that people get from others with the virus HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) by having sexual intercourse, or sharing needles or water bottles.  This disease is a huge problem because Algeria lacks the medical resources needed to help cure AIDS.  While lacking the medical resources, Algeria is making many strides to help prevent the spread of AIDS.  But still, AIDS is a huge problem in Algeria.

AIDS has devastated Algeria by being responsible for 3,000 deaths in 2007, and annually killing around 2,500 people a year in Algeria (Nationmaster.com).  Overall, Algeria is home to 33 million people, 23,000 of them having AIDS, and 19,000 of them being women (Nationmaster.com).  In comparison, Bangladesh, a country with over 100 million people, only has 14,000 people living with AIDS (Nationmaster.com).  It is evident that AIDS is a severe problem in Algeria.

The main reason AIDS is spreading rapidly in Algeria is because of the lack of medical resources.  First, there are only 13 certified hospitals in northern Algeria (Health Care Industry Today).  In comparison, there are over a 100 certified hospitals in Illinois alone.   Second, Algerian hospitals lack the technology, resources, medicines and treatments to prevent and treat AIDS (Health Care Industry Today).  Algeria’s health care problems are all based around the fact that Algeria cannot afford the technology needed to cure and prevent AIDS.

While lacking the resources needed to prevent AIDS, Algeria has made strides in order to prevent the spread of AIDS.  First, the Algerian government has been promoting AIDS awareness and the use of condoms on the radio and in the newspaper.  Second, Algeria is part of a political group called MENA (Middle East and North Africa) whose aim is to help solve and raise money for the problems that these countries face.  In 2008, all the MENA countries met in Oman to discuss about the spread of AIDS. The director of MENA, Renu Chahill-Graf said, ”MENA is going to try to give countries universal treatment for AIDS.” MENA has donated money to the cause of preventing AIDS, Algeria’s secretary, Abdelouchad Dif believes that, “Algeria has a long way to go in the prevention of AIDS.”  While there are no immediate solutions, Algeria and MENA are traveling in the right direction in order to prevent the spread of AIDS.

In Algeria, AIDS is spreading rapidly and there are a scarce amount of solutions to fight this fatal disease.  The Algerian government and MENA are doing the best they can to try to prevent this disease, but they do not have the money and technology needed.  It is evident that there is no immediate solution to cure and prevent AIDS, but since the Algerian government has recently been promoting the use of condoms, hopefully that will help stop the spreading of AIDS.
