Sports in Algeria

The Algerians are very athletic, doing well in track and field, horse/camel racing, and water sports. There is one sport that Algerians are the most fond of, and that’s soccer. The Algerians are exceptionally good at soccer and have been good for quite some time now. People of all ages participate in soccer, girls and boys. The Algerians have been acknowledged for their abilities to play soccer very well and French recruiting has been a big part of Algerian soccer players’ fame. Also, despite the French recruiting the Algerians to play soccer in France, the friendly matches between them have not gone so well because of their tense past.  Both France and Algeria are making conscious efforts to improve their historically uneasy relationship through soccer.

The French recruiting young Algerian soccer players and making them famous has been viewed as a good and bad thing. The six-year-old Algerian that is quite skilled at soccer has been targeted by French scouts just as the French legend Zinedine Zidane was, also born to Algerian parents. (Jamieson, 2009)  Though Zidane, who is famous for the head-but in the World Cup was born in France to Algerian parents, Ishak Belfodhil, another youth, was born in Algeria, but has been offered a French passport for the cost of playing for the French on the under 17 team. (Mohammed, 2009)  By doing this, the French are trying to make peace through soccer with Algeria by making the Algerians famous through France who has historically been an extraordinary soccer program.

Another way the two countries are trying to get along better is by having a friendly soccer match for the first time since the Algerians have claimed independence from the French in 1962.  During the first soccer match of France versus Algeria everything was going fine until the match was interrupted with 15 minutes left in the game. As the French were up 4-1 in the last 15 minutes of the game, dozens of Algerians among the 78,421 spectators invaded the pitch. The fans threw bottles, seating and wood onto the turf.   The match was called off a few minutes later.  This was the only match between these two countries due to the violence that erupted. (Gray, 2001)

Both countries France and Algeria are making strong efforts to gain peace with each other through a sport they both admire, soccer.  Some good points to back up this true struggle are, recruiting Algerian soccer players and making them famous and what both countries are doing to improve this situation. Hopefully, one day this problem can be resolved through a sport that can unite these raging countries and make permanent peace.
