                                                Algeria: War and Ethnic Strife

Civil war and ethnic strife continue to affect Algeria in a negative way.  Algeria, which emerged from a civil war in the late ’90’s, still sees the effects of this fighting today (Algeria: Contemporary Issues). Also, we see terrorist attacks negatively impacting the lives of many Algerians. Berber tribes, which make up the majority of Algeria’s population, feel oppressed by the government.

Civil wars and terrorism poisoned Algeria throughout the 1990’s, still leaving the effects visible now (Algeria: Contemporary Issues). Terrorist groups have killed numbers of innocents. “Last year’s Ramadan period proved lethal, with two successive attacks on September 6 and 8 in a total body count of 58 dead and 257 injured” (Khoury). Despite the terrorist groups being offered amnesty if they dropped their weapons, they continue to put Algeria in a state of emergency (Algeria: Contemporary Issues). This state of emergency negatively affects the life of civilians by taking away their civil rights. Amnesty itself, has put 2,400 terrorist back into society (Algeria 2009 Crime and Safety Report). This is doing nothing to reduce the terrorism.

Berber separatism is just further expanding ethnic problems. The Berber tribes feel that their own language, Tamazight, should be recognized as a national language (Algeria: Contemporary Issues). They have used rallies and marches to try to get this right. These tribes also feel that the government is “deberberizing” Algeria (Algeria: Contemporary Issues). This means that Arab culture is being imposed on Berber Tribes, the spread of Arab culture is causing Berber culture to be forgotten about. This had led to separatism between Berber and Arab culture causing more ethnic strife.

Terrorism is an on going threat Algeria faces. Trying amnesty hasn’t worked and civilians have continued to be injured and even killed. Living with terrorism causes fear and worry for civilians, which further takes away humanity from Algerians.  Berber separatism leads to racial tension between ethnicities and the imposing of certain cultures. If this continues, ethnic groups could turn violent and cause more civil unrest.
